Design

We use the term “design” in its' aesthetic sense. It is that indefinable surface or layer above what is functionally required. “Good design” includes what is aesthetically pleasing, visually differentiating, and what makes something more desirable. Of competing products with the same functionality, the one with the “better design” will always sell more. Sometimes an inferior and more expensive product but with “better” design will out-sell those with more functionality - e.g. the iPhone out-sells all, often functionality better, other mobile phones. Good design sells, and customers will pay extra for it...

What is “good design”? We believe this is not as random, subjective, and arbitrary as some people seem to think. We believe we are all from the same genetic pool and that aesthetics, as experienced through our different senses, have a basal evolutionary purpose or significance. Why else is there such a statistical conformity in our aesthetics, and where else would our sense of aesthetics come from? Things that provide sensory experiences that strike a chord with our basal aesthetic instincts - like symmetry, melody, harmony, rhythm, etc... - will appeal to a wider number of us than those which do not. The greatest artists and designers in our creative history - be they painters, sculptors, musicians, playwrights, poets, choreographers, architects - have been those not just with exceptional skill, but who have exercised their innate understanding of the different aspects of human aesthetic nature and who have designed for one or more of those needs...

We understand aesthetic design and we understand human nature in terms of aesthetics. We offer an aesthetic design consultancy service. Functional design is extremely important also, but that should be your expertise. With the possible exception of computer software design, companies, organisations, and individuals should be better at understanding what their customers functionally require and what is technically and economically feasible in their field or fields of expertise. We can help with the aesthetic design of your products and your presentation and promotional material.

This can take the form of simple feedback of what you are proposing, or we can take a more active, even pro-active, role. By way of a negative example, we believe that bad adverts can make a marketing campaign fail, and we could save you a lot of time and money by helping you avoid such disastrous pitfalls.

This whole area is quite difficult to define. The best option may be just to have a chat with us to see if we might be able to add value...
